EMPOWERING OUR LEARNERS - LEARNING AT HNPS
The NZ Curriculum is the basis for our learning at HNPS.
Core subjects of Maths and Literacy (reading and writing) are at the heart of everything we do.
We place an emphasis on these learning areas and these are taught at the optimum learning time in the morning to maximise learning.
Our Vision statement of “Empowering Learners for Life” means we value a rich curriculum where tamariki experience a wide range of learning opportunities across the whole curriculum.
Over and above the classroom programmes, we provide opportunities for the following:
We have two specialist teachers who teach science and art to our tamariki. Each class spends time during the year with these specialist teachers, exploring and investigating interesting concepts within science and art.
At HNP we acknowledge the importance of cultural and art experiences as an important part of empowering our tamariki. Our tamariki have opportunities to be part of Kapa Haka, choir and dance festivals.
Private tuition is available for tamariki who want to learn piano, guitar and flute. Parents pay for this tuition. Tamariki is taught during the school day at school.
Understanding and caring for our environment – both within the school and in the wider community – is very important to us. As a school, we are currently working towards Silver Award for Enviroschools. We have a very active Enviro team who lead the way as they share their learning with us all. We have a number of enviro-friendly initiatives across the school. These include looking after our worm farm and tending to the veggie garden and fruit trees. We recycle and upcycle as much as we can.
There is so much learning to be experienced outside the classroom. Every class has day trips at some stage to support the classroom programme.
Our Year 5 and 6 classes go on camp during the year. The venues for camp depend on the learning experiences offered.

EMPOWERING OUR LEARNERS - LEARNING THROUGH INQUIRY
Tamariki has the opportunity to follow their own interests and wonderings, are encouraged to initiate activities and be self-directed with the support of their teachers. Tamariki takes increasing ownership of their work. Learning through Play helps to establish the foundation of our school values.
During Discovery Time, tamariki further develop their inquiry skills. Opportunities are offered for tamariki to try new things, follow their wonderings, explore their questions, and problem solve. They continue to build on and use our school values and skills they learned during Learning through Play.
Tamariki uses the Inquiry process at a more in-depth level by asking a question or exploring a wondering. They find relevant information, critically think about their inquiry and plan a relevant action.

EMPOWERING OUR LEARNERS - HNP LEARNER PATHWAY
The Key Competencies of the NZ Curriculum of Managing Self, Relating to others, Participating and Contributing, and Thinking work alongside our school values in the HNP Learner Pathway.
At each level of the school – Te Kakano (NE-Y1), Pakiaka (Y2), Te Rito (Y3-4) and Mahuri (Y 5-6) – there are aptitudes to learning that tamariki are taught and develop. Each year builds upon the previous aptitudes.

EMPOWERING OUR LEARNERS - LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
We believe that all children have the qualities and attribute to be leaders. At HNP there are many opportunities for our tamariki to experience leadership roles. Leadership skills are developed across all levels of the school. We offer a variety of leadership roles – House Captains, Student Council, Librarians, Flag monitors, PAL (Physical Activity Leader), Road Patrol, Peer Mediators, and Cultural Leaders, to name a few.
