Havelock North Primary School - 14th March 2023

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Kia ora koutou,
This week we welcome Samantha (Sam) and Sadie. Well done on making such a positive start at your new school kids.
It was certainly nice to get some sun over the weekend. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come and we may yet get a "summer".
Learning Conferences
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the learning conferences last week. We do hope you found these useful. A big thank you to our staff for their hard work in what was a busy week.

Strike
As you will have seen last week, Teachers around the country have agreed to strike this Thursday. Our school, along with a number of others, has been granted an exemption, so we will be operating as normal. We do, however, support the strike as we need to find ways of attracting and retaining good people to teach our future generation.

Free Firewood
As mentioned last week, Mark Gannon has kindly offered to split the wood this Saturday 18th March. He's after a team of 6-8 people to help him with the process and the wood can be taken away for firewood. If you are able to assist Mark please let Kerin in the office know admin@hnps.school.nz

Year 4-6 Swimming Sports
This Friday we will have our annual Swimming Sports. Due to the fact that we have not been able to have any time in the pool prior to this event, it will look different to past years. Usually, we have two to three days of trials before our Swimming Sports to ascertain each child's ability. This year we anticipate only having 'Championship' races due to time constraints. For those less competent swimmers, who are not involved in the 'Championship' races, there may be a free swim at the conclusion of the event. Swimming Cups will still be contested. Parents are welcome to this event.

Assembly Thursday
Due to the swimming sports being held on Friday, Room 13’s assembly will take place on Thursday from 9am. Thank you.

Puketapu School Update from Chris Fox -Principal
"Thank you to everyone who has reached out over the past few weeks. Your words of kindness and offers of help have been very supportive.
For anyone wanting to support we have set up a fund to help people in our Puketapu community who are most striken."

Some people may wish to donate directly to school. In the first instance this will pay for buses to the swimming pool as we lost our swimming season this year.

Quote of the week
“Love the life you live. Live the life you love.”
Bob Marley

Have a great week everyone.

PB4L

Our PB4L focus for the next couple of weeks is, 'We are mindful of others'.
It is important that we teach our kids about how everyone is different and that we need to be mindful of the way we treat others. In class the children will be having plenty of learning around inclusion.

Home and School News

Home and School Association Inc (same as a PTA/ Friends of the School etc).

Notice of Annual General Meeting - Monday 27th March
Venue: School Staff room or via Zoom: 7:30pm.

Anyone is very welcome to come along, get involved and have a say on fundraising events and spending for the school. It’s great to have a good representation of parents across the year groups. We offer zoom for those unable to attend physically.

The 2nd committee meeting of the year will follow the AGM.
We will have some vacancies such as Treasurer, Chairperson and Secretary as well as getting involved in teams for various events throughout the year - so if you are able to offer your time and skills with only 2 meetings a term, we'd love to hear from you prior to the AGM. Email homeandschool@hnps.school.nz
If you are not wanting a formal role but can pitch in this year, there are other ways to support for example helping out the odd Friday and handing out Sushi orders.
Check out the Home and School page on the School website, email us or call Maggie (Chairperson) 0220878493 if you want to know more.

Sport

Most of our Term 1 sports have started or continued from where they left off pre-cyclone. Sadly, some organisations have had to cancel some Term 1 sports due to venue damage or use for cyclone recovery purposes. Sports currently going ahead are; Cricket, Waterpolo, Netball, Touch Rugby and Futsal (although we are playing at school as opposed to PGA). Sports that have had to be cancelled are Summer Hockey, Basketball and Volleyball. We will be in touch with regards to crediting your account for these sports.
See below for a picture of the amazing HNP Stags Y3/4 cricket team.
