From the Principal’s Desk Term 1 Week 3

Tena Koutou Katoa

Our thought are with those families affected by the fires in the district over the past couple of days.

Well done to our Year 4-6 students who did a great job at the school swimming sports held on Monday. While the conditions were warm, the wind made life pretty difficult. I was proud of the way every child did their best and it was great to see the children supporting their peers, regardless of ability. I would like to extend a big thank you to those family members who braved the elements. Your encouragement was appreciated.

This week we welcome Nikita Mete and Frankie Spriggens. Well done on making such a great start to school.

Tonight and Thursday we have “Meet the Teacher” sessions. This is a great opportunity for you to hear from the teacher and ask any questions you may have about the classroom programme. This will lead nicely into the Year 4-6 Parent-Teacher interviews next week. This is a 10 minute discussion for you to talk to the teacher about your child and to share information. . You are more than welcome to have your child at the interview should you wish. To book these interviews please use the link https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter the password z8kem. Children in Year 0-3 will have their interviews when they get their school reports. This will be twice per year with the timing of the report coinciding with National Standards reporting. The reason for this is to ensure we are reporting accurately to parents after 20,40, 60,80, 100 and 120 weeks of school. Please see our website for further information.  http://hnps.school.nz/learning/national-standards/  As parents, you are more than welcome to approach teachers and arrange extra interviews during the year should you wish.

Last week the teachers were very lucky to have renowned literacy guru Gail Loane working with us. Gail is an expert in the field of writing and has a real focus on explicit teaching to improve success. As part of the process a system was set up for teacher observations and providing purposeful feedback.

Have a great week everyone.

Regards
